Textile and Apparel Designing

Brief History
The Department of Textile and Apparel Designing is one of the five disciplines of
Community Science (formerly known as College of Rural Home-Science) which came into existence
in the year 1974-75, when Dharwad was a sub campus of University of Agricultural Sciences, Hebbal,
Bangalore and later under the aegis of University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad in 1986. At the
beginning, the department’s nomenclature was ‘Clothing and Textiles (CT)’. Later in the year 1995
the nomenclature was changed to Textiles and Clothing (TCL) and further to Textile and Apparel
Designing in the year 2006. The MSc. and Ph.D. degree programme in Textile and Clothing was
initiated in the year 1991-92 and 2000-01 respectively.
Growth of the Department
The Master’s Programme in the Department was initiated in the academic year 1991 and
Doctoral programme in the year 2000. Till today department has produced 70 MHSc and 11 Ph.D
students. The students are trained and specialized in the areas of Textile and Apparel designing,
Textile chemistry, Technical textiles, Textile and Apparel quality analysis and Apparel Designing.
With the financial assistance of ICAR, FIST, ASIDE, DST/DBT, the department is well equipped
with Textile testing equipments, Industrial sewing machines, Digital printing and Embroidery
machines, Handloom (one loom) and power looms (four looms) with Dobby and Jacquard
attachments, Computers and Textile & Apparel Designing software’s which supports UG/PG teaching
and Research work. The intake capacity for Master’s Programme is 8-10 students and for Doctoral
programme are 3-5 students per year.
Academic Programmes at a Glance
The department offers Master’s and Doctoral degree programmes in Textile and Apparel
Designing. The students in the department are trained and specialized in the areas of Textile and
Apparel Designing, Textile chemistry, Textile and Apparel quality analysis, Technical textiles etc.
The post graduate course work of the department is categorized into core courses which must be taken
by all the students of the department admitted to the MSc/Ph.D. degree programme. Additional
required courses relevant to the field of the specialization within the department and supporting /
minor courses from other related departments may be opted by the students depending upon the
research problem. The research work and thesis writing is carried out separately under the guidance
of the Major advisor from the Department and other advisory members constituted in the committee
which include faculty of the department and related disciplines.
